On 28th April, the NEWSREEL2 project and the Pécs Academic Committee organized a book launching event to introduce the book with the title of 'New Skills for Journalists: Comparative perspectives from Europe'. The volume, which was published by the Transylvanian Museum Society, contains the most important research results of the NEWSREEL & NEWSREEL2 project.
The programme started with a presentation by Annamária Torbó, professional leader of the NEWSREEL2 project. In her twenty-minutes introduction she gave an overview of the project, especially the developed project materials. The next programme point was a round-table discussion led by Petra Szávai (PhD candidate of the University of Pécs). Annamária Torbó and Gyula Maksa took part in the discussion as editors and authors, while Rita Glózer as an author of the book. First of all, all of the participants shared their involvement in the NEWSREEL project and introduced their specific field of research: ethical challenges of the digital public sphere, graphic journalism and storytelling in social media. Over 50 000 people have already signed, in less than four weeks, an open letter asking for a six months ‘pause [in the] giant AI experiments’. The signatories include university professors, CEOs and co-founders of major IT companies, ethicists, scientists, musicians, artists, and, taken as a whole, members of the general public – all concerned with the risk of the disrupting developments of artificial intelligence (AI). The widely circulated document raises four fundamental questions: the first puts in focus massive misinformation and disinformation threats from AI, the second is questioning the absurdity of automating essentially human skilled tasks, like text writing, image producing, or arts, the thirds calls attention to the huge risk of replacing human minds with AI systems, while the fourth highlights the danger of humankind dramatically losing control.
we must ask ourselves: Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us? Should we risk loss of control of our civilization? Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders. Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.

We are pleased to announce that a NEWSREEL book has been published based on the research results of NEWSREEL & NEWSREEL2! The title of the volume is "New Skills for Journalists: Comparative perspectives from Europe" and it was issued by the Transylvanian Museum Society.
The researchers and lecturers who contributed to this book are from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, and Romania. The book's content is the result of their research, focusing on specific journalistic fields. Some of them are mainly related to technological developments (like data journalism or artificial intelligence and journalism), while others are connected to the social role of journalism (like ethical challenges of the digital public sphere or covering migration); these aspects are strongly intertwined in practice. The volume is recommended to everyone interested in the current trends of European journalism, but primarily to media and journalism students and lecturers.
The book will be launched in the framework of an event from 14:00 on 28th April, in the center of the Pécs Academic Committee, Hungary (PAB Székház - 7624 Pécs, Jurisics Miklós u. 44.) During the programme we will discuss the content of the volume and the main project results with some of the authors and invited journalist. New Skills and the Challenges for Teaching the Next Generation of Journalists were under discussion at ISCTE-IUL, Lisbon, on 30th of March. The debate took place as part of the final multiplier event of the NEWSREEL2 project.
The NEWSREEL project was born from the need to produce quality contents and training solutions for innovative areas in journalism, and until now it has produced free access to online courses in these areas. The B104 Auditorium of ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon was the stage for the last multiplier event of this project, and AI and journalism were at the center of the discussion.

In the representation of NEWSREEL2 team, we would like to invite you to the final multiplier event of the project with the title of New Skills and Teaching Challenges for the Next Generation of Journalists: Presenting NEWSREEL2 Outcomes and Discussing AI and Journalism. The event will take place at the ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon, Portugal on the 30th of March.
During the full-day event the project team will present the main outputs that were developed in the framework of the project. After a general project introduction, you will hear presentations from the project members in the following topics: verification and debunking, improving democratic sensibility, social media storytelling, foreign coverage, and Algorithms, robot journalism and AI.
The central field of the event is AI and journalism, therefore there will be a keynote presentation by Nic Newman from the Reuters Institute about threats and opportunities, as well as two round-table discussion with journalism educators and journalists.
