Report on the third multiplier event

The last day of the Berlin Summer School on 30th September was held in the framework of a Multiplier Event hosted by Hostwriter in the "iac Berlin" community space. Besides the students, lecturers and researchers of NEWSREEL2 also presented their work connected to the latest phase of the project.

The programme was opened by Tina Lee from Hostwriter and Editor in Chief of Unbias the News. After that Annamária Torbó, professional leader of NEWSREEL2 and lecturer of the University of Pécs introduced the project in general. During the section, partners presented six from the nine professional fields and the developed e-learning materials which are available as pilot teaching materials on the project portal:

  • Rita Glózer (University of Pécs) talked about Storytelling in Social Media,

  • Lenka W. Císařová (Masaryk University) presented the field of Improving Democratic Sensibility,

  • Dominik Speck (Erich Brost Institue) introduced the field of Foreign Coverage,

  • AI & Journalism was presented by Ana Pinto-Martinho (ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon),

  • Marian Popovici & Antonia Matei (University of Bucharest) introduced the materials connected to Verifying and Analysing Fake News & Debunking Disinformation.

During the second part of the event, the audience could listen to some interesting panel discussions.

The ‘Free the Newsroom‘ panel provided insight into how journalists' work contributes to creating safe spaces in media, and how the fast-paced mainstream media fails in conveying human stories beyond breaking news. Anna Dotti (German Media Makers), Sonia Nandzik-Herman (Refocus Media Labs) and Ariam Tekle (Black Coffee Podcast) took part the discussion & it was moderated by Zahra Salah Uddin (Hostwriter).

The panel led up to an introduction by Yaser Taheri to the screening of the film “Nothing About Us Without Us“. Taheri shared his experiences about what it was like to film at the Moria camp.

The second panel ‘New Trends in Journalism’ focused not just on outlining new trends in journalism, but crystalized how the commercial pressure on the media sector threatens its ability to fulfill its watchdog function in society, and how this is one of the root causes of the eroding trust. Participants of the panel were Mercy Abang (Unbias the News), Anneleen Ophoff (Are We Europe), Marija Ristic (Balkan Investigative Reporting Network) & Zahra Salah Uddin (Hostwriter) moderated the conversation.

The evening came to a close with an inspirational speech by Nigerian author and satirist Elnathan John and the night ended with a performance by Pakistani singer-songwriter Sameen Qasim.
